June 14, preparations for many things

This morning there were many of us gathered around for orientation by Ruth at Beautiful Savior Church in Anchorage.  11 had slept in the library, another 8-9 in the 4th grade classroom.  Meeting these fellow brothers and sisters in Christ, knowing that we are all here for one purpose, to teach the children about Jesus, this was a moment of returning my focus on our mission here.  We had a couple of day of beautiful weather, even Denali was totally cloudless.  But now it is time to focus on Faith Lutheran Church in Homer.  It is also a beautiful part of the country.  Tomorrow after church is when we begin decorating and setting up the VBS materials.  Gretchen, the DCE here, has been very busy and seems quite organized!  It's going to be a good week.  Carol, Nicole, Bill and I are excited.

Today's VBS was about Nehemiah rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem, and praying many times to God for guidance and protection.  Learning a few more details about the children's worries and concerns, divorces and sick grandmas were common.  They got to rebuilt a portion of the wall with newspaper stuffed into 2 brown grocery bags.  Hopefully the message comes through anyway.  We're just planting seeds, the Spirit is the one that works faith.  Sue was telling me today of a native village they did a VBS in on one of their first trips here.  A couple years ago they heard that 12 years later 43 of the villagers were baptised one Sunday.  It was thrilling to know that they had even a small part in spreading the Gospel there.  Who knows what the Lord will do with us here.

We spent the evening driving up to Eagle River Park, walking some of the trails and enjoying the beauty.  I feel to tiny compared to the mountains, and yet I know the Lord loves me.  Wow.  At the park God even blessed us with a brief visit with a college friend that happened to be out there enjoying the weather also.  Thank you Lord!

Sunday June 2

Sunday, worshipping with God's family in Alaska.  We worshipped first at Our Redeemer Lutheran in Chugiak where we are sleeping and drove to Palmer and got the end of the service at St. John, where the VBS is being held this week.  Communing with fellow saints and feeling God's presence here is powerful.

Then we got to have fun doing teacher type stuff in the afternoon:  decorating our classroom for our Bible Adventure tomorrow.  To create a peaceful "pasture affect" you hand a blue sheet from the light fixture and the wall for a sky and stick plastic greenery into the end of swimming noodles for palm trees.  There is a hustle and bustle all over the building.  Glenn and Sue will be leading the recreation and games, so hopefully it doesn't rain EVERY day.

Then the rain stopped in the evening and we were able to get a good walk in down to the gas/food station and get some good Alaskan fresh air into us. Ahh...
